Rather than dreading the first snowfall in Canada, get outside and enjoy the season. Canada transforms into a winter wonderland during the winter months. Canadians know how to get through the winter. Once you’ve learned how to dress for cold weather, you’ll discover that there are plenty of things to do in Canada during the winter that make it worthwhile to travel up North for the holidays. So, instead of hibernating this winter, get outside and start making plans for a winter trip to Canada. Don’t forget to dress warmly!

Niagara Falls is frozen over.

Canada has beautiful waterfalls that are even more magical when they are frozen. In the winter, you can find them everywhere, but one of the most iconic sights is a frozen Niagara Falls. Nothing beats the sight of the massive frozen horseshoe falls. Seeing Niagara Falls frozen is truly unforgettable.

Skiing and snowboarding are fun activities.

Canada has some of the best downhill skiing and snowboarding locations in the world. Visitors can check out illustrious ski resorts that offer excellent accommodation and facilities that complement the outdoor fun, in addition to the beautiful snow-capped mountains. From Whistler Blackcomb to Mont Tremblant, Canada has some of the best ski resorts on the planet. You can downhill ski from coast to coast!

SkiJoring

Cross-country skiing is also extremely popular among Canadians. This winter sport is available almost anywhere in Canada, and most ski resorts offer it as well. If you aren’t quite ready for downhill skiing, try X-country skiing. It’s enjoyable for the entire family. Skijoring is a truly unique Canadian winter adventure. It combines skiing and dogsledding and is a lot of fun.

Observe the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights)

The Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis, are a natural display of light in the night sky. This phenomenon can be seen only in the Northern Hemisphere. The Auroras were known as “The Dance of the Spirits” by the indigenous Cree people. It costs nothing to gaze at the beautiful Aurora Borealis, and there are many places to see the Northern Lights dance if you visit Canada in the winter.

Rideau Canal Skateboarding

Ice skating on the Rideau Canal is one of the most iconic winter activities in Canada. Winterlude, Ottawa’s winter carnival, usually kicks off the skating season on the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rent skates and take a spin on the world’s largest skating rink. It stretches for miles with warming stations where you can sample frozen maple syrup and beavertails, as well as plenty of fun adventures along Ottawa’s Rideau Canal.

Attend a Winterlude event.

Speaking of Winterlude, there are numerous winter carnivals to attend in Canada. When the days become shorter and colder, Canadians love to celebrate with lights, ice sculptures, and winter activities. Winter carnivals are held in every province throughout the winter. Winterlude in Ottawa is our favourite.

Quebec City Carnivale

Quebec City is famous for its winter carnival, Carnivale. This UNESCO World Heritage City comes to life in the winter. The old town has been transformed into a winter wonderland that appears to be frozen in time. You can stop by the famous Ice Hotel for a drink at the ice bar. It was North America’s first Ice Hotel, opening in 2001, and you can watch ice sculpture competitions there. In the winter, make a point of visiting North America’s most European city.
Festival of Ice Wine

Sue-Ann Staff Barrel Rolling Competition in Twenty Valley. (CNW Group/Wine Country Ontario)

The Ice Wine Festival in Niagara Falls is a one-of-a-kind winter festival in Canada. We enjoy going outside to sample the delicious ice wines of the Niagara Region. Niagara on the Lake wineries open their doors to sample food and the region’s popular dessert wine made from frozen grapes, while also displaying ice sculptures and winter cheer. During the Ice Wine Festival, we’ve even gone snowshoeing and ice tasting at the ice bar, as well as simply enjoying the great outdoors. If you’re looking for unique winter activities in Canada, this festival is a great place to start!

Skiathos is a popular destination for both local Greeks and European tourists, thanks to its beautiful beaches and vibrant nightlife. If you’re wondering what it’s like to visit Skiathos, Greece, keep reading to learn about all the things to do in Skiathos.

Monastery of Evangelistria

A group of Kollyvades monks founded the Evangelistria Monastery in 1794. You can either hike or drive up to the Monastery from Skiathos Town. The monastery is located on a hill in a beautiful setting surrounded by a pine forest.

It has a long history, and one interesting fact is that the very first Greek flag was woven and blessed at Evangelistria Monastery.

Agios Nikolaos Church

The Agios Nikolaos Church and clock tower provide one of the best views on Skiathos. It is located on a hill above Skiathos City and offers stunning views of the old town of Skiathos as well as the Bourtzi Peninsula that separates the Old and New Ports of Skiathos.

Three Bishops’ Church

The Church of the Three Bishops, located in Skiathos Town, houses the icon of Panagia Kounistra, the patron saint of Skiathos. It’s a picturesque building with a tall clock tower that was built in 1846.

Old Town of Skiathos

Skiathos town is the main heart of the island, with every amenity imaginable. Get lost in the maze of stairways and back streets, and don’t forget to stop along the harborfront for a sparkling glass of wine.

Go by boat to Lalaria Beach.

Lalaria Beach is the most beautiful location on Skiathos, and it is the beach that has made Skiathos famous, but it is only accessible by boat. It will give you that picture-perfect postcard shot that you’ve been looking for in Greece, with a striking sea arch, clear azure waters, and giant white seacliffs. There are two boats daily, so be prepared to spend the day. Bring water, food, and anything else you might need if you’re being dropped off at the beach. Water shoes are also advised.

Kastro is a Medieval Castle.

Castle of Chlemoutsi-Χλεμούτσι

Greece is an ancient country with numerous ancient ruins scattered throughout the Greek Islands. The Skiathos Castle, located in the north of the island, is a 14th-century mediaeval castle. Throughout the centuries, Skiathos has been ruled by the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. The ruins are perched on high sea cliffs overlooking a beautiful beach.

MYANMAR
Mandalay, Myanmar’s former royal capital. The city is large, busy, and charming in its own way. Mandalay is an excellent two-day stop on your Myanmar itinerary. Visit the world-famous U-Bein Bridge or admire its unique architecture and pagodas. Find out what there is to do in Mandalay.

Manadalay’s Background
It can get quite cold at night, so bring a sweater. You can tell the difference between poor and right in Mandalay. Mandalay’s outskirts are impoverished and surrounded by garbage. That doesn’t change the fact that they are the friendliest people you will ever meet.

1. Go to Mandalay Hill.

Mandalay Hill is a must-see; this 240-meter-high hill offers a panoramic view of the entire area. Getting up there is easier than you might think; they built an elevator and an escalator at the temple’s base. Remember to cover up and remove your shoes. Mandalay Hill has an entrance fee of K1000. ($0.75)

Don’t be surprised if Myanmese people approach you and ask to take a photo with you. They simply want to show this to their family members.

2 Hsinbyume Pagoda in the clouds

The beautiful white Hsinbyume Pagoda is close to the Mingun Pagoda. You can explore every level of the pagoda by walking up the stairs. The Pagoda, while not large, should not be overlooked when visiting Mandalay. This is one of the reasons you should go to Myanmar.

3. Kuthodaw Pagoda houses the world’s largest book.

This area is enormous in size. The world’s largest book is housed in the Kuthodaw Pagoda, which is surrounded by an insane number of small white pagodas.
Take at least an hour to explore this area. A Myanmar Temples tour also includes the Kuthodaw Pagoda.

4. The Mingun Pagoda transports you back in time.

Mingun Pagoda is one place we wish we had more time to visit. This is located across the Irrawaddy River, approximately 90 minutes outside of town.
The almost square-shaped pagoda is unique. The entrance may be a little crowded, but if you walk around it, you will be the only one there. Make a reservation for a Myanmar Temples tour.

Have lunch at the relaxed, riverside ‘The Garden Cafe’ while you’re here.

5. The Mandalay Palace

Mandalay Palace is a massive fortress near the Hill. It’s a nice place to walk around for a while, but there’s not much to do or see.

The admission fee is 10000 Kyat ($7.5). This is a combo ticket that also includes admission to the Shwenandaw Monastery, Kuthodaw Pagoda, and a few other attractions.

6. Monastery of Shwenandaw

The monastery’s beautiful wooden details are worth seeing. It’s small, so you won’t need much time, and it’s close to Mandalay Palace.

El Nido in Palawan is one of the most beautiful places in the planet. Hidden lagoons, limestone formations, sandbanks, and gorgeous islands with white beaches and azure water are just a few of the highlights of the Philippines’ 7,641 islands. The most popular reason to visit El Nido is for the island hopping cruises, but there is more! Find out what to do in El Nido in our comprehensive travel guide.

Rent a kayak and explore hidden beaches.

Rent a kayak and explore the hidden beaches of Cadlao Island. The island across town is home to incredible fauna such as monkeys, large reptiles, and hornbill birds. Rent a transparent kayak in El Nido for an unforgettable experience.

Duli Beach is a beautiful white-sand beach.

Duli Beach is a 2-kilometer-long undiscovered white beach on the far northern coast of El Nido, Palawan. The beach has an entrance fee of 50 PHP (1 USD).
The waves are suitable for beginning surfers, and instruction are available at Duli Beach. There are a few small drinks available, as well as a snack shack. However, we do not recommend that you eat here. A simple rice and vegetable dish made us and many others sick.

The zipline connects the islands.

A 750-meter zip line connects one island to the other. What a fantastic idea! This experience is available at Nacpan Beach for 500 – 1100 PHP (16 USD). It’s a thrilling fantastic flight and a must-do if you’re looking for some excitement. For the finest experience, take the flight around sunset.

Taraw Cliff Hike

Climb to El Nido’s highest point. Before climbing these steep rocks, it is essential that you hire a guide and wear appropriate footwear. You will have a fantastic perspective of the entire area once you reach the summit.

Walk at Corong-Corong Beach

Walking on Corong-Corong Beach at sunset is one of our favourite things to do in El Nido. It is the most peaceful beach in town. Begin by following the coastline from Corong-Corong Bay all the way down to Boodle Fight Cafe for a delectable Filipino meal.

At Las Cabanas, you may watch the sunset.

Las Cabanas Beach is one of El Nido’s most popular and developed beaches. It is ideal for sunbathing, swimming, drinking or eating at one of the many beach bars, and watching the sunset. The tricycle fare from town is 150 PHP for two people. Instead, we recommend renting a motorcycle for 500 PHP a day.

This tranquil haven of nature is the sole public garden in the bustling medina. Step inside to take a break from negotiating and admire the lovely water features, birds, plants, flowers, and palm tree-lined walkways. Relax, cool off, and observe the people enjoying the park as well.

Make sure to visit Fes’ world-renowned tanneries! Discover hundreds of earthen pots filled with different coloured dyes used to tint animal hides. The tanneries are an important element of Fes culture and one of the nicest things to do in Fes. But be warned: the smell is rather powerful! Locals will try to give you “free mint” to help with the odour, but we’ve seen a lot of people pay afterward. As a result, it’s a good idea to bring some mint or a scarf with you.

5. Kairaouine University is Africa’s oldest university.

The Kairaouine Mosque is the world’s oldest university, as well as Morocco’s second-largest mosque. Because it is one of the most important religious buildings in Fes, only Muslims are permitted to enter. Although tourists are not permitted to enter the interior, they can view it from numerous of the entrance gates. The marble courtyard, fountains, arches, tiles, and carvings are all exquisite. Not only that, but there are a lot of people worshipping in this holy structure, which is still used as a university!

Even if you’ve never been to Thailand, you’re probably aware that it has some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, friendliest people, and delectable cuisine. Thailand is officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand and is located in Southeast Asia.

Thailand’s Interesting Facts

1. Bangkok’s Full Name Is Quite Long

Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city, is only known to foreigners. Its full name in Thai is Krung Thep. However, even that is a condensed version of the city’s full name: Bangkok’s official name is one of the longest in the world! Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Krung Thep Mahanakhon Try saying that after a couple of glasses of SangSom!

Krung Thep translates as “City of Angels,” whereas Bangkok means “village of wild plums,” so it’s easy to see why Thais prefer the former.

2. Bangkok Was Once Known as the “Venice of the East”

While we’re talking about Bangkok/Krung Thep, would you believe the city was once built on stilts overlooking canals? As in Venice, these waterways, or ‘khlongs,’ served as the city’s primary travel and transportation routes. Most of these canals have now been filled, but there are still floating markets on the outskirts of the city for tourists and locals to enjoy.

3. Thais Love Their Royal Household

Thai people adore and respect their royal family, which is fortunate because criticising or disrespecting any member of the monarchy is considered treason.

In Thailand, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the Queen’s birthday, while Father’s Day is celebrated on the King’s birthday, with both days celebrated by Thais across the country in honour of their beloved monarchs.

4. Approximately 95% of Thais are Buddhist.

Although Thailand does not have an official religion, Buddhism is practised by approximately 95 percent of the population. And, as the “guardian of the faith,” the Thai King must be Buddhist at all times.

5. Thailand is home to the largest solid gold Buddha in the world.

The 15-foot-tall golden statue of Phra Phuttha Maha Suwana Patimakon has to be one of Thailand’s most impressive sights. Despite the fact that looters stole from temples for centuries, this statue was protected by stucco. If you only see one Buddha statue, make it this one, especially since it is worth millions of dollars and weighs 5.5 tonnes. It can be found at Bangkok’s Wat Traimit.

6. The majority of Thais Have A Nickname

The majority of Thai people have two names: their full, official name and a nickname. However, unlike in other countries where a nickname is simply a shortened version of your given name, Thai nicknames are meaningful and chosen by your parents at birth. Thai parents will frequently choose names that have meaning in Thai or words that sound good in a foreign language. Boys’ nicknames include Bank, Neung (one), and Benz, while girls’ nicknames include Tangmo (watermelon), Chompoo (rose apple), and Nan.7.

7. There are 76 letters in Thai.

If you enjoy learning fun language facts, Thai has many unique and interesting features.
The Thai alphabet contains 76 letters, 44 consonants, and 32 vowels! Thai has five tones, which makes it difficult to learn. Many tones sound the same to our Western ears, but getting an inflection wrong can make all the difference.

8. Monkeys Rule! Lopburi, Thailand

Have you ever wanted to visit a monkey-run city? If so, go to Lopburi, where macaque monkeys rule the city’s old town district.
The monkey business gets even weirder in November, when the Pra Prang Sam Yot temple in Lopburi hosts the annual ‘Monkey Banquet Festival.’

While it may not be as exciting as the legendary Songkran festival, watching 600 monkeys feast on rice, salads, tropical fruit, sausages, and even ice cream is an absolute must-see! Locals hold it to thank the furry creatures for the tourists they bring to the city and to bring them luck if they treat the monkeys with respect.

9. Europeans never colonised Thailand.

As this impressive feat demonstrates, random fun facts can also be educational!

Thailand, unlike its Southeast Asian neighbours Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia, was never colonised by Europeans. Thailand’s Thai name, Prathet Thai, translates as “Land of the Free,” which seems apt.

10. The National Anthem is performed twice daily.

If you’re in a public place at 8 a.m. or 6 p.m., expect to stand up, stop what you’re doing, and remain silent as the national anthem plays. These are the times when the Thai flag is raised and lowered, and it is considered impolite to speak or remain seated while the anthem is playing. Also, the Thai National Anthem is played before each film. Make sure to stand up, watch the accompanying video, and remain silent.

If you thought the best beaches in the world could be found on a Caribbean island or in the far east, you haven’t seen Egypt’s beaches yet. My favourite beach destination is El Gouna, Egypt.

With the Red Sea running the length of the country’s eastern border, you have plenty of options for the ultimate vacation in one of the world’s best seas.

In 2014, El Gouna Resort received the Global Human Settlements Award for being a Global Green Town, among other honours.

1. Relax on the beach

My favourite part of visiting El Gouna is relaxing on the beach.
Whether you’ve booked a hotel or an Airbnb apartment, you’ll be able to work on your tan in the ever-shining sun.

Most hotels have private beaches, and if they don’t, you can still access the beaches for a fee.

Furthermore, Gouna beaches offer a variety of activities for the entire family, such as kayaks, banana boats, jet skis, parasailing, and pedalos.

2. Kiteboarding

The wide beaches and strong winds in Gouna attract many Egyptian kite surfers as well as world champions.

You can spend several days here exploring the beauty of kite surfing at any of its professional centres.

3. Swim with dolphins in the sea

Yes, you can literally follow dolphins into the sea. You can book a day trip to the middle of the sea, to a location known as the dolphin house.

You can simply jump into the water and swim among a herd of dolphins in their natural habitat.

4. Investigate Marine Life

Did you know that the Red Sea is home to some of the world’s best coral reefs, making it an ideal location for diving and snorkelling?
There are agencies all over town that can take you on day trips into the sea, to the ideal location where you can discover a diverse world of reefs and fish.

You don’t need any prior experience to take a dive or snorkel. It’s even appealing to children.

5. Go golfing

El Gouna has 18-hole golf courses where you can learn how to play golf or continue where you left off.

6. Poolside Party

Looking for something different to do this morning?
You should go to one of the many pool clubs that are located on the beaches here.

I tried Duport Beach Club, which has a spherical pool with a fantastic view of Abu Tig Marin.

7. Riding a Horse

You can leave the beach for a while and ride an Arabian horse through the desert to watch the sunset.
And maybe you could have a cup of tea in a tent and talk with the locals.

8. Go on a desert safari.

My favourite excursion here is to ride in a buggy into the desert, where you will fall in love with nature at its best.

Only you, your friends, and the guides are allowed to enjoy the desert’s tranquillity.

9. Take Advantage of the Nightlife

You don’t have to be a party animal to enjoy el Gouna’s vibrant nightlife.
If you visit the marina at night, there is a bar around every corner, ready to serve you local drinks and delicious cocktails.

10. Plan A Special Dinner

If you want to treat yourself to a delicious dinner, the marina offers a wide selection of five-star restaurants.
You can eat fresh seafood, homemade Italian plates, burgers, and, of course, oriental traditional food at reasonable prices.

The best way to do so was to put yourself in the most unusual situations possible.

1. In the Caribbean, you can go shark diving.

The Caribbean should be at the top of your list of places to go shark diving around the world, and for good reason. It’s not only a great place to dive with Great Hammerhead Sharks, but whale sharks migrate there every year as well. Combine that with the opportunity to dive with many other types of sharks in some of the world’s most unique chain of tropical islands, and there’s no excuse not to get in the water and explore!

2. Nicaraguan Volcano Sandboarding

Anyone can go sandboarding, but have you ever thought about going down the side of an active volcano? If you take a vacation to Nicaragua, you will be able to do just that.

Although strenuous (after all, no one is going to carry you up and down the sand dune), visitors to the area can explore the summit of Cerro Negro volcano and then arrange to sandboard down the extremely steep slopes to the base.

3.In the South Pacific, you can go island hopping.

The South Pacific, splattered with lagoons that are shaded in blue colours to match an artist’s palette, offers a plethora of opportunities that any true adventurer would love to explore.
Spend some time exploring not only the islands of Tahiti, Fiji, the Cook Islands, Mauritius, Seychelles, and the Maldives, but also those surrounding them.

Gather a small group of friends and commit to doing so for at least 4-6 months.

Sure, you’ll have to take a leave of absence from work, but trust me when I say it’ll be well worth the “sacrifice.”

4. Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands Cruise

If you have the time and money, an adventure cruise through Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands should be on your bucket list.
This ultimate polar expedition will take you to some of the world’s most remote wilderness.

You will not only get to see the true beauty of Antarctica, but you will also most likely get to see some incredible wildlife in their natural habitats.

A better Southern Ocean experience could not be found, with king penguin colonies, albatross colonies, elephant seals, and much more.

5. Trek to Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley

The trek up to Machu Picchu is considered a right of passage for many travellers around the world, and it is something you should not miss out on on your global adventure.
Of course, you don’t want to take the traditional route up; instead, take the long way around. What I’m referring to is the trek from Vilcabamba to Machu Picchu.

This 5 day overnight trek will take you from Vilcabamba to Asuntina Pass, through Yanochoca, descending into the village of Yanatile, and (eventually) to Machu Picchu.

6. Iceland is known as the “Land of Fire and Ice.”

If you’re at a crossroads in your life and looking for an adventure that will truly leave an impression, the Land of Fire & Ice is the place to go.
As it turns out, there aren’t many places left unexplored on our planet, but Iceland appears to be one of those last untouched destinations, with landscapes that are not only majestic, but also filled with a magical beauty that will captivate any traveller who dares to visit.

Along with Iceland’s peaceful way of life, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views, active volcanoes, glaciers, fish-rich waters, and sensational coastal villages.

7. The Allure of an African Safari

It’s no secret that Africa has some of the world’s best safari destinations. With good reason!
This is the part of the world where you go to see the “Big 5”: South Africa, Tanzania, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and many other countries. But what makes this trip so special?

The fact that many of these animals are becoming extinct as a result of the ongoing poacher crisis.

8. In Southeast Asia, go off the beaten path.

If you’ve ever gone backpacking in Southeast Asia, you’ll quickly fall in love with the place.
During my eight-month tour of this part of the world, I spent the majority of my time trying to find those hard-to-reach places that were rarely visited by other travellers.

As you might expect, in a place so well travelled by other travellers, this could be difficult.

If you go to some of the villages in Northern Laos, you might be in luck. Just remember to think outside the box and venture further off the beaten path than you might think necessary!
